What is arnica used for?
Arnica is commonly used in alternative medicine. It is said to cure:
- bruising
- Pain
- muscle pain
- Arthralgia or joint pain.
- Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis often referred to as “wear and tear arthritis”. In this condition, the cartilage that protects the joints wears off over time. It is often treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Some believe that arnica is a safe and natural alternative to NSAIDs.
In 2013, Australian researchers looked at seven studies on topical herbal medicines for osteoarthritis.
Arnica gel seemed to work almost as well as Advil (ibuprofen). The benefit was in reducing pain and improving joint function in people with osteoarthritis of the arm.
Postoperative pain and bruising
Proponents of Arnica believe it could reduce bruising and swelling after surgery. It is used either topically
Muscle pain
Muscle pain is also called myalgia. It is associated with many medical conditions. It can also occur after a simple muscle overload.
Most research on arnica has focused on post-workout muscle pain. Arnika has long been used for this purpose in sports preparations.
One review of the studies strongly supported the combined use of oral and topical arnica for muscle injuries.
